Wheel of Time series vs Lord of the Rings?

I was looking for an epic fantasy series to read and almost every single list had one thing in common and that was Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I just wanted to ask anyone who's read this and also read J.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series, if they were similar. The LOTR books were a bit too much detail for me, as I couldn't picture everything well and only after seeing the movies was I able to grasp the epicness of the story......Any comments from anyone who's read either would also be welcome..........Thanks!!
