How can i read a word directly without knowing its phonetic symbol？?

I know it is a shotty explanation, but think of words you do know, and how they sound, for instance cancer. Well, CA as in car, since there are two consonance NC, you can ume that the first syllable is CAN, as for CER, the word cedar would be a good example. sometimes you just have to pause and look at it.
